After all you can’t keep every kitten you breed!
So how on earth can you make sure that your kittens are booked and ready to leave home when they are ready?
Well it’s no big secret . . . you need to advertise them, it’s how you advertise them that makes the difference and that’s what I am going to show you.
In ten years of breeding cats I have only once had a kitten that stayed longer than he should and this was due to a last minute cancellation and the time of year. Let down at the last minute on 20th December, thank you very much and a Merry Christmas! (Actually it was a fantastic Christmas and he found a lovely home two weeks later)
Finding Homes For Your Kittens, a Concept You Must Understand
Advertising kittens in the right way is the key to finding good homes and knowing where and also how to advertise them is what will separate a successful breeder from the crazy cat lady with 87 cats.
I just want to clear one thing up before I go on . . . people use the internet for absolutely everything! Looking for a new cooker, buying a house, checking the lottery numbers, listening to music or watching a film . . . .
We use the internet for virtually everything in our lives and this includes searching for kittens.
If you are advertising in shop windows, local newspapers, supermarket notice boards and relying on word of mouth then I am afraid you are doing it all wrong and are destined to become a ‘crazy cat lady’!
Let me show you how to do it the right way . . .
How to Write Your Kitten Advert
Writing a descriptive advert that jumps off the page and talks to your kitten buyers as if it were a piece of personal correspondence is essential.
Your kitten buyers have some expectations such as GCCF registrations, free insurance, inoculations, litter training and kitten packs etc. You probably do all this and a lot more . . . so make sure you put this in your advert.
Your kittens are not fridge freezers or televisions, they are living and breathing and have their own personalities. Show this in your adverts and if you can let your own personality shine through as well.
Show them you are caring responsible breeder with kittens that you love and make sure you describe their personalities and habits. Give them a story it’s what they want to read. See my example . . .
Two stunning seal point Siamese kittens available from a litter of four. These gorgeous boys will leave home GCCF registered, have four weeks free insurance, having completed a full course of inoculations. Both boys are full of confidence and extremely playful. They enjoy their food, love chasing tin foil balls and are very talkative. It would be nice if these two boys left home together but not essential as they are both brimming with confidence.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Everybody has heard the old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words, so believe me when I tell you that you need to take photos of your kittens and use them in all forms of advertising. Put simply, photos sell your kittens. People love looking at photos of kittens after all isn’t that what the internet was designed for?
Ever thought about using video content? Showing a quick two minute video of your kittens will have your inbox and telephone groaning from all the kitten enquiries you receive!
Where to Advertise Kittens
There are various cat related websites that people go to when looking for kittens. UK Cat Breeders and Siamese Cat Breeder are just two of them. Try a quick Google search as if you were searching for kittens and see who appears in the first couple of pages, can you advertise on any of these sites?
Are you a member of any cat clubs and do any of them have websites? If they do then can you submit an advert?
Internet forums, are a bit outdated these days with the advent of social media but they are still a useful resource. Are you a member of any cat related forums? If you are then advertise the fact you have kittens!
Use Your Own Website
It is vital . . . let me say that again just to drive the point home it . . is . . vital that any cat breeder interested in finding homes for their kittens has their own website.
Kitten buyers expect any reputable breeder to have a website.
Now using your website to its full potential is the key. What you need is a modern, clean looking website that has a responsive design (meaning it looks just as good on a phone, tablet or PC).
You want the website to have pages that show the kitten buyers what you and of course your cats and kittens are all about. In addition to the standard home page a good website should also have, as a bare minimum, a page about your girls, boys if you have them, kittens and of course a contact page.
Your website should include oodles of photos, descriptions about your cats, information about the breed and kitten and cat care in general. If possible have videos in addition to your photo galleries.
I would also highly recommend you have social media integration so people can flit between your social media profiles (yes you need to be using social media) and your website. This way you can build up a level of communication with your kitten buyers which really is essential.
Your website should be easy to navigate, load quickly, have a pleasing design, updates should be easy to do and not a huge chore (let’s face it if it is hard to update you won’t do it!) and most importantly of all the cost needs to be affordable.
Cats Whiskers Web Designs have given UK Cat Breeder readers a discount code to use, check out their different deals and take advantage while this special offer is still running –
At the very least you need a personal profile but I would also recommend you have a Facebook page for your cattery. Facebook is one of the very best places for cat breeders to connect with kitten buyers and other cat breeders.
Social media is a fantastic way to build an audience of adoring cat worshippers and to spread the word when you have kittens. It’s also a real time-waster so beware!
Going the Extra Mile and Keeping Your Kitten Buyers Happy
Regular email updates with extra photos etc. and titbits of extra information on your kittens are normally a hit and also keep the lines of communication open. Getting a new kitten for most people is like having a new baby. They are so excited and want to know everything about their new arrival.
Sending them an email once a week with an update and a few extra photos that don’t already appear on your website goes a long way.
Now here’s the thing, any one of the tactics above will increase your chances of finding homes for your kittens. Do a few of them together and the results will blow you away . . .
I think it is also worth mentioning that all of the methods of advertising mentioned can be done with little or no expense. Probably the only thing you should consider investing in a professional website but even that can be done yourself if you are IT friendly.
If I had to choose just one method of advertising kittens it would have to be my own breeders website. Your website gives you credibility and also gives you a central hub to point all the other methods of advertising at. Begin with a good website and start to use all the other tips mentioned above, I guarantee you will see a dramatic increase in your kitten enquiries.
